Fountain solution and press washes are often the largest VOC contributor in a sheetfed offset shop. Conventional washes run 600 to 900 g/L VOC by weight; conventional fountain solutions add isopropyl alcohol (IPA) at 8 to 15 percent by volume.

Low-VOC and alcohol-free fountain solutions have matured significantly. Modern formulations run at 0 to 3 percent IPA (or use IPA substitutes based on glycol ethers) and deliver equivalent ink-water balance on most commercial work. Three major certifications cover sustainable forestry in North America: Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI), and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). All three certify that paper comes from responsibly managed forests, with chain-of-custody verification from mill to printer.

FSC chain of custody under FSC-STD-40-004 (current version V3-1, January 2021) defines three product label categories: FSC 100% (all material from FSC-certified forests), FSC Mix (FSC-certified material, controlled wood, and/or recycled), and FSC Recycled (all material from reclaimed sources). A fourth input category, FSC Controlled Wood, identifies material verified not to come from unacceptable sources (illegal logging, conversion forests, GMO plantations) but is used as raw input, not as a finished-product label.

Improve Process Efficiency and Waste Reduction

Process changes deliver gains that consumable switches alone cannot. The three highest-impact areas are paper waste, energy consumption, and water usage.

Paper waste reduction starts with imposition and makeready. Tight imposition (maximum sheet utilization), reduced makeready (fewer setup sheets per job), and computer-to-plate workflows that eliminate film all reduce paper consumption directly. Used solvent recovery is the single highest-value waste reduction step.
